A Wonderfully Happy Ending

Bear, an 8 year old, German Shepard mix, came to Second Chance due to some very tragic circumstances. His elderly owner, Don, had taken ill and had to be placed in the care of a Nursing Home. Don had lost his wife earlier in the year as well and now was to be without his beloved dog. Bear, by his own owner's words, “is the biggest joy in my life.” He had adopted him from another MA shelter when he was only 1 or 2 yrs old. Bear and Don were best of friends and they meant the world to each other.

Bear was very depressed when he got to us and obviously missed his master deeply. He would lay in his run and stare out the kennel door into the outside world for hours on end. We placed him very quickly into one of our most loving and caring foster homes, so that he could once again enjoy a chance to enjoy life with his foster mom and he spend his day with her own dog as his companion. He was much happier and showed his personality for the first time to his new temporary family. He “took over “ the couch and loved to be silly and lay on his back, paws straight up in the air as he nuzzled in his blankets.

Don spent his days in the Nursing home doing his best to recover, and did. He told us that his motivation to get well, was to be able to get back to his own home and be with his buddy Bear. He did that, and he finally got well enough to get back to the comfort and security of his own home. But his Bear was not there. With noone to care for Bear, the family had surrendered him. Don was devastated.

Purely by fate, one of Don’s caretakers saw Bear on our web site and the contacts started to happen. Through a series of phone calls back and forth with Second Chance we were able to connect and figure out that our Bear, was really Don’s Bear.

A joyous, and somewhat tearful reunion was arranged and Bear is now back with his lifelong friend. Both are just so happy, and the smile on Don’s face and the content look on Bear’s as he lay beside his master was just more than anyone could ever imagine.

When we asked Don where Bear liked to spend most of his time, he pointed to the “couch”, where Bear’s blanket was spread out and waiting for him. Now his foster mom understood why he loved the couch at her home so much. A very Happy Ending, for a human and a dog, who love each other so, so much…… Don’t we all know how strong this bond is.

Rocky (fka Nick) and Tala October 4, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
We took Rocky (fka Nick) home in early July so that our shepherd Tala would have a friend of the same species home with her. Rocky has adjusted well to home life and really loves to be around his humans. Often, without warning, he jumps up on your lap to cuddle. He also enjoys being next to us on the couch, or stealing a spot up close in the bed. He's very hard to turn away:) He's a very proud little man, when his nose isn't pressed to the ground on a walk it's being held high along with his tail wagging in the breeze. We couldn't be happier and are pleased to give this dog a "second chance." We are saddened as well sometimes, wondering who could've possibly wanted to get rid of this little guy. Thanks again for the opportunity, we hope you enjoy the pictures! Sincerely,

Alissa Lee and Nick A.

Princess October 4, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Princess is doing awesome. She is such a true lap dog. Sleeps with each one of us. A little with my youngest, then to my oldest and then in with me. She's getting along great with the dogs upstairs. Her best friends is a BIG black lab name Jake. She loves the car and barks at me each time I leave. When guests come she barks when they get there and then when they leave, as if to say come in and please don't go. It's too funny. We are just loving her. Thanks for our precious baby!

Gina, Vinny and Shane!

Lacey (fka Freddie) October 4, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
We do love Lacy......she is a suggle bug. She loves to ride, and now that it is cooler, she can come with me to do errands. She is very active, and does need alot of exercise. We try to walk 3-4 miles a day plus play a little ball.

Carol

Fiona (fka Tippy) October 4, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
We are all so happy we adopted Fiona (formerly Tippy)! The minute she got here, she just fit right in and made herself at home. She loves going for car rides--especially when that means a nice long walk at the end! She is wonderful with the kids! They play with her, chase her, use her as a pillow and she loves it all! Thank you so much for sending Fiona home.

The Kimball Family

Cooper (fka Houston) October 2, 2008

Ishkabibble, Tessa, and Zane October 2, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
It's the St. John family! I just wanted to send in a photo of all 3 of our animals that we have adopted from your awesome facility! This is the first time I got a picture of all three of them together. Almost 2 years ago we adopted our first cat Ishkabibble. A little over a year ago we adopted our second cat Tessa. And lastly...the animal least in charge is our dog Zane that we adopted back in April The three of them get along just great and all play together. Together we all make quite the entertaining family! Thank you so much for bringing there great companions into our lives!

Benny October 1, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
I know my new human wrote to say how happy she was with me, but I just wanted to say how happy I am too. This picture was taken of me in the car on the day my new family came to take me to my forever home. Can you tell I'm smiling? I have a great home and a bed of my own, not to mention three kitties that I can play with when they let me. I even went to Bark and Bubble for a complete grooming and I'm told that I now look like "a show dog." I want to thank all the staff and volunteers of Second Chance for taking such good care of me during by stay with you. I'm bonding well with my new family and feline friends and I know they will love me forever. I loved hanging out with everone at this year's Walk and Wag and I'm wagging my tail in hopes that Second Chance will be selected for the Makeover this year. So long for now,

Benny

Sam (fka Simon) September 29, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Simon is now known as Sam, and he is doing well. He has adjusted pretty easily and has been very playful. He has also adjusted well to his new sister Callie (another Second Chance adoption from 7/12/07). They enjoy chasing one another around the apartment and wrestling. So far there are no concerns that I can think of. He will have a vet visit pretty so, but I'm sure that will go well.

Dan

Fresca September 29, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
I just wanted to update you on the status of Fresca who we adopted last Jan. She is so healthy and happy. Bill and I think she has the best temperament of any cat we have ever had and we have had many!!! Let us know if we can donate anything (money or blankets and towels). We all are lucky that she got a second chance. Thanks again.

Priscilla and Bill P.

Maya September 29, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Maya is doing great!

Amy

Stewey September 27, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Stewey is doing great! He is a REALLY good dog. He is 99% perfectly housebroken, and waits patiently for me to return home (as quickly as possible I will add!) to walk him. He loves his early AM walk (as do I) and is a wonderful companion who is great with the kids and is a real "mama's boy,"basically glued to me whenever possible. I take this as a good sign that he is bonded. He eats well, has been healthy (we saw the vet right away and he was proclaimed healthy, of course), and his only problem is that he is rather noisy when he sees a new, especially big dog. He wants to establish his rank, I think, being understandablyt proud of himself! I asked my older son to comment on Stewey for you and he said, very seriously, "he's an awesome dog." We love Stewey and really appreciate Second Chance choosing us as his family. Best,

Kelli K. and family

Pistol September 27, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
My name is Pistol and I came to my "Forever Home" in mid-July. I would have written this earlier, but I've been very, very busy. It's a lot of work getting a couple of baby-boomers trained. They hired a trainer for me who did a pretty fair job of getting them in line. I walk on a treadmill twice a day, plus I have almost an acre of woods and lawn to explore. Once in a while their grandkids come by and help with the ball and Frisbee throwing; a dog can't get too much of that you know. We do some leash walking in the neighborhood, but that's really more for them; it's far too slow-paced for me, but I humor them and do a fine job of the "Heel" thing. It's taken a while, but I'm learning that squirrels are our friends and don't need to be chased; I even help to feed them now. The trust in our relationship continues to grow; just this past week, I agreed to let them keep me in their bedroom at night, rather than in my crate. They're making progress. To close, let me offer my hopes to my fellow rescued friends. Just hang in there, be patient, and you'll luck out like I did. Besides, the nice folks at 2nd Chance are pretty cool company in the interim. Now if you'll forgive me, I think one of parents needs to get some fresh air.

Frank (fka Oscar) and
his friend Chester
September 27, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Oscar (now known as Frank) is doing great. He is a bundle of energy and a whole lot of fun. We recently got a golden retriever puppy and the two of them love to run around and play with each other. Frank loves to cuddle on the couch and sleep right next to me. The first couple of days were trying because he was still marking in the house but we are past that now and he does great only going outside. We couldn't be happier with Frank. We would like to thank everyone there for choosing us.

Nick, Jenn, Frank and Chester (the Goldie)

Dino (fka Tobie) September 25, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Here is my Dino standing next to the car he is named after!

John P.

Ken September 23, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Just an update on how Ken is doing - I'm pretty sure he loves it here - he runs around and plays all day long. He loves his new pug pals & the 2 older cats (although they aren't too sure of him yet but they tolerate him and sometimes let him eat out of the same bowl) He has the whole run of the house and finds great places to play & hide. I have attached two photos of him lounging. He's quite a character. He's doing excellent and he's been a great new addition to the household. Thank you for everything & we'll be sure to adopt our next friend from you and spread the word.

Patty G.

Stephanie (fka Augustine) September 22, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Stephanie AKA Augustine is doing great. Things have been going really well. We got her a nice kitty structure with a cubbie. We placed it right in front a big window. She is in it, on it and scratches it a lot. She is jumping and running after things. She seems very happy and healthy(litter box looks good) and she is eating and drinking. We enjoy her purrrrrring when we pet her; and of course, the leg weaving. Although we have some wonderful days lately, she isn't very curious about the outside yet - still a little timid. She has lots of love from her new "mom" and her new mom's friends. Thank you so much for writing. That was a nice touch.

Angela

Moxie September 22, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
He is doing wonderfully, we changed his name to Cody. He and my other cat are finding their way, not much hissing anymore, and the older Cat only hid under the bed for a day and a half:). His is wonderful with the dogs, had no problem getting settled. It's really cute, he weaves in and out of their feet while they are eating. The dogs patiently lift one leg then another while he purrs waiting for his breakfast. We are really enjoying our new addition!

Tracy

Penelope and Janet
September 22, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
They are doing great! They have adjusted well with each other and with us. Penelope is now Penny Lane, aka "penny" Janet is now Abbey Road, aka "abbey" It is funny to us , cause I actually picked out Janet/Chrissie, and Marcy picked out Penelope. But now Penny is my little buddy and Abbey is Marcy's. We thought Penny would right away be inspecting everything in the house in the first few hours when be brought them to there new home, but it turned out to be Abbey that was much more social at first. Penny has turned out to be the leader of the bunch, but Abbey likes to still prove to her that she can do just about everything Penny can. We had our niece and nephews over and they were awesome with kids, which is a huge change from our previous cat sophie. We thank you for everything, the kitties are doing great and love to snuggle with us and each other!!! We wanted them to be best of friends and i think they really are starting to be. Thanks again, we loved everything about our experience with you guys, everyone was so nice and were all truly animal lovers just like us, so it made the whole experience wonderful.

Brian

Sunkist and Pepsi September 22, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
We are happy to announce that Sunkist and Pepsi are doing great! They are adjusting well in their new home. They love all the attention that the kids give them. At first Pepsi was a little shy but he got over it in about 48 hours! It took Sunkist only about 5 minutes before he started to run all over the house. We are big soda drinkers in our house so we are keeping their names. Everyone seems to love their name as much as we do! Thank you everyone at Second Chance Animal Shelter for making this such a great experience! Thanks again,

Amy, Aaron, Morgan, Griffin, Rory, Sunkist and Pepsi S.

Eva
September 21, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
I would just like to say thank you for little Eva...she is as charming as she is pretty! My daughters have decided they want to keep her name as it suits her well. In fact she has been referred to as Eva the Diva! She and Rufus have come to an understanding so the adjustment time was very brief.. I will be E-Mailing the shelter soon with pictures and an update, but I wanted to thank you for everything and to let you know she is being treated like a queen and will live a long happy life with us. Her personality fits right in here for sure..talk to you soon...

Little Bear and Tubby
September 17, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Tubby and Little Bear are doing well. They sniff everything when we take walks. They are better on the leash and our cat is adusting to sharing with the "boys." Attached is a photo of Jenny with them.

John and friends
September 15, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
I wanted to share a few pictures of Johnny in his new home. He is having fun with his new environment and his new cat friends Annie and Jesse. They clean him and chase him as well as he is cleaning and chasing back. His one bad eye doesn't stop him at all. Kind Regards,

Michael Stuart

Kiko (fka April)
September 15, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
As you can see April has grown a lot.

Nancy

Squiggles (fka Cheryl)
September 8, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Cheryl is incredibly adorable. I've changed her name to Squiggles -- because she does. She is affectionate, smart, playful. For safety's sake, she stays in a cage when I'm not in the room. Her box is in the cage. When we are both here and she needs to use the box, she gets up on the bed next to the cage, and sticks her paw into the box and starts scratching to tell me she needs in. Wow! I'm not sure I've ever had a cat that communicated quite this way before. She hardly ever cries. Speaks to me when I first come into the room, but no meowing otherwise. Thank you for my treasure!

Stephanie

Bella (fka Corey)
September 5, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Corey has been renamed Bella and is adjusting beautifully at my parents' home. She is truly a lap cat and now my mom and dad can't imagine life without her. She fit right in and is a very happy cat.

Sue

Mr. Anikin George Jingles (fka George)
September 4, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
His name is Mr. Anikin George Jingles. Anikin from Pre darth vader (black), George (came with the cat) And Jingles because we got him a bell on his collar. He is so dark and he can blend well. We have a big house and I took us a while to find him the first day and I was nervous about him so I got a bell. However, now we come home and Mr. Jingles comes running to greet us and that’s what Peter and I call him, Amanda calls him Anikin. He meows only to be continuously stroke, which Amanda fulfills quite well. He is very happy and has been typing part of this letter. Thank you so much for everything. It is really nice to have a nice place to get a pet from. I have helped with the Walk and Wag for many years. Hopefully I can drum up lots of support this year. Thank you,

Kristin

Grumpy and Tony
September 3, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
The kids are having a blast with both Tony and Gizmo. Tony is definitely a go getter and loves his little toy mice and the scratching pole. Gizmo continues to be the mellower kitten and loves peoples company and affection. Thanks for checking.

Charlie

Copper (fka Elmo)
September 3, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
I can't believe it has been almost a year and half since we adopted Copper (f.k.a Elmo) from your wonderful shelter! Although it has taken some time for Copper to adjust, he is doing just fine now. Believe it or not, we have taken this stubborn beagle and have taught him how to swim and howl on command! Car rides are a must, as well as snoring on the couch and ripping the stuffing out of all his new toys. Although we now live over two hours from your shelter, we have decided that it is time to find Copper a new friend. So be on the look-out for the "Triple C's" as Chris, Cassie and Copper will be making a visit to Second Chance to drop off some new toys and start up a brand new adoption process! We look forward to see you all. Sincerely,

Chris, Cassie and Copper

Peanut (fka Bosley) and
his friend Sweetie
September 2, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
"Bosley" is just the cutest little guy and very affectionate. Our plans were to rename him "Buddy" because he was to be a companion or a "buddy" to or other cat. However, the urge to call him "Peanut" due to his size was hard to ignore.... we found ourselves calling him "Peanut" whenever we talked to him... guess he's stuck as "Peanut'! The first night was interesting as "Sweetie" realized there was another cat in the house. Her nose was out of joint and she would not talk to me for days...she did show mothering instincts and by the next morning was taking care of "Peanut" by what appeared to be protecting him and washing him. As the days follow, they continue to get used to each others ways and are becoming good friends. They have had us in stitches with their antics. The "kids", as we call them, run through the house at a gallop taking turns chasing each other. Their favorite hangout is the tub where they jump in, then jump out. Things are very interesting around here with the two of them, and we couldn't be happier with our choice to bring home another cat. Peanut is a welcomed addition to our family. Thank you for checking on us...

Diane and Clint and the kids......

Farrah
September 2, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
We changed her name to Miley. She is doing great. She is very cuddly and playful too! Thanks for checking up on her.

Leah

David
September 2, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
> David is doing fine. He was a little scared at first but he has gotten used to his new home. He likes to be brushed. Have not changed his name yet. Thank you,

Francis

Butterscotch
September 1, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
We are absolutely in love with Butterscotch. Yes, that is still his name. My five year old had exclusive pet naming rights and she chose to keep his name, but added gumball for his middle name. He had adapted to his new big brother very well. We have a three year old cat at home that looks almost identical to Butterscotch. Within a few hours being home with him, my older cat was grooming him and they have become best friends. It has worked out amazingly perfect with our other cat. It hasn't worked out as well for my house plants, but we can handle that! My children love him and he loves to be held by them. My eight year old daughter will put him in her lap and he'll curl up and fall asleep. We do think that Butterscotch does have vision loss in the eye that is scarred. If we approach him from that side, he clearly doesn't see us and gets very startled. Its a bit of a concern for us because we feel bad for the little guy. He's just so adorable. I knew as soon as I picked him up that he would be perfect for our family. I will try to get a picture to you soon of Butterscotch with his new brother. Thanks,

Lynn T.

Pebbles (fka Virginia)
August 30, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Pebbles is healthy and so happy and attached to my side...which I absolutely! Love!!! She’s now 35 pounds...loves the rain/water/ocean/lake. And as before, she’s our pebs-girl... Thank you so much for helping us find her.

Penny

Honey and Moxie
(fka Bonnie and Blake)
August 30, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
I know that you must be wondering how the little puppies are doing, and how the old folks who took both of them are holding up, so I thought I'd send a quick report even though we don't have the perfect photo for the happy endings. We'll send that report later. We have re-named them: Bonnie is now Honey-for her looks and personality, and the fun of saying "come here, honey". Blake, who would have had to be Clyde, if she had remained Bonnie, but they came to a bad end, so we didn't want that attached to them, is now Moxie, because he has it in spades. We thought about Mocha, but learned that it is awfully common these days and figured that a name that went with a soda couldn't be bad. We have just altered the old Wrigley's ad a bit to "double the trouble and double the fun". Fortunately, nature, in her wisdom, makes baby animals irresistibly cute, so all the work and even the frustration is joyful. The puppies love their big yard, and now will go running full tilt about the length of a football field or so, and then may find a piece of golden rod to wrestle. Far from Moxie being the bigger bother, his little sister is quite the instigator, who loves nothing more than running up to steal or tug on whatever toy he has chosen. They sleep, reluctantly, in separate crates, and have some separate time with us, which we expect will increase, but for now they are often still a twosome. They are doing pretty well at learning about going outdoors immediately after leaving the crate, and they never make a mistake in their hall area, so they seem to have the concept. What they don't get is that escaping to the living room instead of outdoors is not a viable option, but we figure that these incidents are our fault, not theirs, so we're not discouraged. We don't even mind the still necessary four a.m. outings, for which they are very grateful, and then back to bed. I'm sure we feel somewhat like new parents, and wish that we had Joe in residence for the next six weeks to answer all our questions, but we feel like we learn something every day. The trick is to try to stay one step ahead of them. If we can keep up at that pace, I'll consider us dong ok. Every day we take great pleasure at interacting with two little beings for whom the world is a big toy box. Forget the fancy gifts of our generous friends! A paper towel roll is just as appealing, and, oh, the fun of finding a big twig to share. Like childhood in general, this we know is fleeting, and is not only a gift to be savored, but a time to be used to make the next stages delightful in their own way. Our thanks to all of you,

Susan and Larry

Colten
August 30, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
I just wanted to update you on Colten. We have had him for almost 2 months now and he is fitting in great. I keep telling people that want a dog, that they should consider adopting a greyhound. He is so grateful to have found a home with us. Currently Colten is in a refresher obedience class where he is practicing old skills and learning new ones. We plan on having him continue his training, so that he can work in my husband's classroom as a therapy dog. Thanks,

The Kings

Guiness
August 30, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Well Guiness has settled in and is having a ball. He loves to race around the back yard and fetch tennis balls and gets along great with his Scottie Brothers. He loves to be hugged and always wants to be with us. He loves to ride in the truck and sits proudly in the front seat. Guiness is a wonderful companion and is more than I could hope for. He has found his forever home and I'm so glad it was us.

Ken, Nancy, Guiness, Charlie Cartboy, Scottie

Cody
August 28, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
He is doing really well and we just love him. He is such a fun dog and he has really bonded with us. He loves to be with us even if we're just hanging around the house and even our cat doesn't mind having him around! We haven't started any formal training yet, but we are constantly amazed at how smart he is. For example, when we used to put his leash on or take it off we always had him sit and wait - we used to tell him to sit, but these days he just does it without the command! Another neat thing is that he's gotten to know our walking route to a point where he knows exactly at which point on the street to turn around to head home - we used to have to stop him and turn him around - now he just does it without us doing anything or saying anything. There are many more examples but I won't bore you with them. One of the things we were worried about with him was socializing him with other people and other dogs. Sometimes he gets so excited seeing new people he won't listen to commands, he pulls like crazy to get to them, and he just gets kind of wild because he is so focused on checking out the people. But I think he's getting better about all that - he has been to three parties and at two of them he did really well - he was off leash, played well with other dogs, and would come when called. At the last party there were even a bunch of kids, including a very young girl that wanted to lay on him, wrap him in a blanket, and so forth - and he handled all that without any issues. Unfortunately, there was one party where he got really wild, started running around like a maniac, and actually knocked a little girl AND an adult right off their feet! I'm not sure how, but this is something we really have to work on.... We're still so thankful that you chose us to be Cody's caretakers. We really love him and are looking forward to many great years with him. Take care,

Skip and Barbara

Katie
August 28, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Just a note to tell how happy I am with Katie. She's only been here a week but you would think she has spent her whole life here! She's the nicest, sweetest, gentlest dog I ever had. She immediately bonded and became a part of the family. She gets along with my other dog so well you'd think they were brought up together as pups.... She has learns so many things so quickly and is a gift to fill a spot in my life . She's always by my side. I couldn't be happier with her. Thank you!

Charlie N.

Tom and Jerry
August 25, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Just wanted to give you an update on the boys. We are totally in love with them! Jerry has put on about 10 pounds. He looks great. He was having some pretty bad separation anxiety especially when my husband would leave. He is getting much better and as time passes I am sure he will be fine. Tom is getting big but is so gentle around the girls. Especially around my youngest. If she ever cries he runs to her and starts kissing her until she stops. He is also learning some new commands. He can sit and we're working on a few others. All are neighbors love them and they walk great on their leash now. Jerry is a bit of a bully when meeting other dogs so we're also working on that. They are such love birds to each other it makes my heart melt. The girls also love to see them play fight. We all sit on the couch and watch the show. We are so happy to have them and can't imagine our life without them!!! Thanks again,

Lisa and John M.

Duncan wins Bronze!
August 21, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
We wanted to share a photo of Duncan with you. He goes to Dances with Dogs once a week, a doggie daycare. He and our standard poodle Ava play exhaustively all day long and poor Ava needed a break. He LOVES going to play with all his buddies at the daycare. This photo was taken last week when they celebrated their 2 year anniversary of being open. In honor of this milestone, they had doggie Olympics day. Duncan won a bronze medal in the "hurdles," jumping bravely over a broomstick! They also had swimming (kiddie pool for lounging), diving (who can jump in first?), high jump, long jump, and finally tennis. The opening ceremonies were hilarious! What a great day! He's also in obedience training and doing quite well. We see lots of potential in his future. We adore him and can't believe our good luck.

Fiona and Felicia
(fka Lilly and Lauren)

August 21, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Fiona and Felicia are settled into their new home. They are truly a joy to have around. I tell every one I know to adopt from Second Chance! Thanks so much,

Dorothy

Gorilla

August 20, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Just to let you know that Gorilla is settling in very well. We learnt a lot about him already -- he loves riding in the car, he's not too fond of organic pet treats, but he does love swimming pools -- he made a bee-line for our pool straight away on Friday night and jumped in!! He seems to be quite a good swimmer as well! He's been doing a lot of sleeping! He sleeps on his new pet bed in our bedroom, or at our feet wherever we are! He wasn't very interested in food, unless he ate directly out of our hands, but I'm pleased to say he ate his food directly from him bowl this morning. I'm in the office today, but Eric is working from home, and he said that Gorilla is in the office with him, under the desk :) He's been doing a lot of tail wagging, giving kisses, and pricking his ears up when we talk to him, and his tail thumps when he's told what a good boy he is. We're delighted to have him...he's such an awsome dog. I'll send some photo's soon. Thanks again,

Victoria

Happy

Bashful

August 18, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Happy and Bashful are doing fine. They are jumping up on our laps and they sleep with us for most of the night. They are eating fine and drinking water fine. Thank you for checking on our new additions. Sincerely,

Prudence

Lexi

August 16, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Walter and I, and our old guy Scout, came out to Second Chance and adopted Lexi about a year and a half ago. It that doesn't trigger your memory, maybe you'll remember that we didn't know if Walter was allergic to her for a couple of months. He was suffering from bronchitis, and it was touch and go as to whether we would be able to keep Lexi. We finally decided she was not the source of the problem. Well, I just felt like updating you. Lexi continues to be a constant source of entertainment and love. She is so funny and affectionate. Smart as a whip, too. She and Scout have a very good relationship, which took quite some to work out, but it was worth the wait. They play in the woods, with Lexi doing most of the running. She comes charging towards Scout, who then chases her a short distance, causing Lexi to run, run, run away! Sometimes Scout initiates the whole thing. It's wonderful to see Scout playful. They also sometimes grab hold of a big stick together, and trot through the woods with their "two- dog stick". We are so happy to have Lexi as part of the Crockett family. Thank you for your part in the journey. It's been a wonderful match. I hope you and all your dogs are well, and that Second Chance is doing well too. Take care,

Val

Mooch and Tessy
(fka Snow White and Ruth)

August 16, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
The girls have adjusted well! It's so nice to have the pitter-patter of kitty feet again! We have renamed Snow White, she is now Mooch because any time someone has food she is right there sticking her nose into it. She is the sweetest lap cat too. Ruth is a little more independent but very affectionate. We also renamed her Tessy (we just like the name). The best part is the girls get along with each other very well. Thanks for checking in and sorry it took so long to respond. I'm sending a picture of the girls so you can see how cute they are! Thank You!

Terese and Chris M.

Oreo

August 15, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Just a note to let you know that Oreo is doing just fine now and she really seems happy here. She is the topic of discussion with most of the senior residents at my end of the complex as she sits in the window most of the time and watches everything that goes on outside. People come up to the window and talk to her because she will actually hold a conversation with you...meowing every time you say something to her. They get a big kick out of that. I am enclosing a picture of her on her favorite spot at the window.

Sadie

August 12, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
It’s me Sadie! I went to my forever home on June 17th and I love it here. My new owner and I are getting along really well. It took me less than a week to adjust to my surroundings and guess what?? I even get to explore the wild and wonderful outdoors around my home and beautiful back yard. I’m living in a safe environment and my owner keeps a close eye on me and just loves how obedient I am to her call. I am receiving lots of love and excellent care here. Got to go now. Many, many thanks to all the people who loved and cared for me at the shelter and special thanks from my owner and me to my foster mom JoAnn. Bye for now,

Sadie

Red

August 12, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Just wanted to let you know that Red is doing GREAT and he is loving life. Everyone I know is amazed at how much he has "blossomed" and become a real happy-go-lucky doggie! He plays with toys now and runs around my living room carpet in crazy circles when he is excited. He seems so happy. He is such a good boy- I just adore him - he goes everywhere with me! Anyways I just thought you would want to know how he was doing - I still plan to stop by the shelter at some point soon (when I am not quite so busy!). I will email you to let you know we are coming before we stop by so you can see Red. I have included a picture of him with his new summer haircut (I prefer the shaggy look myself, but I'm sure he is less hot with his current haircut!) See you soon.

Rose
August 11, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Rose is adjusting VERY well. She has been great with the other animals in the house. She is curious about them but when they say "back off" she does. She has quite the personailty. I am really glad I picked Rose. She is a sweetheart. She likes to sit in the windows and look out the screen doors. I have a horse farm across the street so she sits and watches the horses. At nite when I watch TV she sits on the back of my chair. She is playful, and she has been eating well. And of course, she talks to me all the time- but I love it. My husband and I really like her and are very happy she is part of our family. When I have a chance I will send you some pictures. Thanks again for checking in.

Kevin
August 11, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
No concerns. He is kind of shy and very much a lap cat. He is doing well and we just love him. He is an absolute Joy.

Grifin (fka Mark)
August 7, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Grifin is doing great. He is getting along with his new brothers and sisters. I couldn't ask for a better kitten. He is a joy to have in the family. He gets hugs and kisses everyday. I have attached a current picture of Grifin. Thanks again,

Jessica and Grifin

Chewie (fka Frogger)
August 6, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
"Chewie"' is doing great. We renamed him because to us, he has the face of Chewbacca in Star Wars. He IS housebroken...we have had no "accidents". Right now he sleeps and is confined to the crate when we are not home (primarily so he does not torment our 12 yr old affenpinscher wanting to play.) He loves the outdoors...a little spitfire running around playing with his toys and he is truly a lap dog during quiet time. We love him and just wanted you to know that he has a forever home. Just a brief update, although I will be writing up an adoption story with pictures soon for you to post on your website. Thank you again for allowing us to give him a home!!!

Sue

Kitty and Boo
(fka Bob and Blake)
August 6, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Bob and Blake are doing great, I've renamed them Kitty and Boo after the characters from Monsters Inc. They love being around people, they're both very affectionate, and get along very well. I'm still trying to teach Kitty, the black one, to stay off the table, I think he's been getting it but sometimes I wonder if he's up there when I'm out. Other than that no real problems, just the usual kitten stuff. I've attached a picture, we have lots of company so they always have someone holding them or playing with them! Thanks for checking in!

Linnea

Ziggy (fka Joe Joe)
August 5, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Joe Joe, who is now Ziggy, is doing really well. I'm so happy with him. He has become comfortable at my home, is eating, sleeping, and playing. I just brought him for his second check up at the Vets last week. Thank you for checking in!

Marlie

Scrappy Do
August 5, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
I thought that you would like to hear that Scrappy is doing well. I've been meaning to send along a note sooner, but we have been busy with our house search. Hopefully we will be moving to the next town over in the near future, which will mean a bigger yard for Scrappy to explore. Our cat, Hobo, is much more fond of her canine buddy. She has become very tolerant of his sniffing inspections when she comes in the house. She knows to be quick moving out of the way when he's excited. Our daughter loves her Scrappy, and he's happy to oblige all of her pettings. During the warm summer days we try to find comfort by going swimming, but Scrappy doesn't seem much interested in the water. I've even noticed that he'll walk around puddles! He's adapted well to our schedule, and looks forward to our daily walks. We've been working on obedience commands. He does very well with "sit" and "shake." He's OK with "come" and "stay" -- we're still working on those. He's been a bit of a chewer, so we do need to be conscious of where we leave things. Apparently footwear (i.e., shoes and socks) are his favorite. I'll send along pictures soon. I've been trying to get a picture of Scrappy and Hobo together, but I never seem to have a camera handy during those cute candid moments, and it's impossible to get both of them to pose together. Just thought you would like to know that Scrappy is doing great.

Mickey Mouser (fka Sam)
August 5, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Sam now Mickey Mouser is ruling the roost. He has a best friend (12 year old Brittany) that he runs full tilt at and jumps on. She for some reason loves him and jumps up and chases him. The other two dogs he's a little more easy with. He sits on my lap with the 3 year old brittany in the evening. He's using my 20 year old norfolk pine to hone his tree climbing skills and I have yet to see him walk. It's a little scary when he's across the room and comes flying at you to launch himself in your lap. He loves climbing up on the windowsill to look outside. He had his first feline leukemia shot with one more to go, All distempers and rabies are done. He's one cat that you won't see coming back. He's at his forever home now.

Jill

Busik
August 4, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Busik is doing wonderful! She made herself at home almost instantly.... She has taken to sleeping with my son, which is hilarious! We have no problems or concerns whatsoever, and we appreciate it so much!!! I have attached a few pictures of her with my son. Sincerely,

Jessica G.

Joe
August 4, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Just dropping you a line to let you know how Joe is doing. He had his shots and is doing just fine. He weighs a little over three pounds. He is still energetic as ever and growing like a weed and Loves to sleep in bed with me and my husband. Sending you a picture of him. Had a hard day at work. He has the life of Rielly. Will drop you a few items for the shelter. Take Care!

Tangerine
August 4, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
"Scratch" as we now call him is adjusting very well. I have recomended the shelter and have told everyone of our great experience there. Thanks for the new member of the Gagnon family!

Gilbert (fka Espesito)
August 3, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Gilbert is doing great. He seems to be ajusting well. He is doing very well with our boys. Although, I think he likes it when they are in bed and he can lay on my lap and sleep.

Randy

Coalie Shy (fka Sweetie)
August 2, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
"Sweetie" has been renamed to "Coalie Shy" and she's doing beautifully! Coalie is learning to be as playful as a "kitten" and not as serious as she was when she first came home to us. This is a slow process, due to the stressful situations she has endured in the past. She has learned to trust me, and now is starting to trust other family members. I feel she knows this is her "forever home". She's comfortable confident and content. She now weighs almost 10 lbs. and is "purr"fect in every way. We'll be sending you pictures soon! Take care and thank you for caring. Sincerely,

Patti, family and Coalie Shy

Lettie
July 28, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Lettie is a really a great dog and a great fit for our family. She is well mannered and is receptive to some minor training that we need to do (what she can/cannot chew and mouthing). We had her vet visit yesterday. See the attached pictures and thanks again for the opportunity to have Lettie in our home.

Tim

Tess
July 28, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Tess is doing great. She has adapted very well to her new home and family. We have lots of pictures! I will send some and a story to post on Happy Endings later this week. Thanks again!

Tom and Jerry
(fka) Domenic & Jesse
July 28, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Just wanted to let everyone know Tom and Jerry are doing great! They made themselves at home as soon as we walked in the door. They love our girls and have lots of kisses for them. We are working on crate training. Tom loves his crate but Jerry is not too happy about it, so we're working on it. They have been on lots of walks and meeting all their new "Jersey" neighbors. Thanks to everyone at Second Chance for taking such good care of our boys. We will keep you posted on their progress. Thanks again,

Lisa M.

Buster
July 27, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Buster is doing great. He is adapting well, and has been quick to get the hang of the invisible fencing. We still keep him on lead in the yard, but play catch and frisbee with him on the 30 foot training lead. In another week or so, he will be ready to be off lead, but supervised, in the yard. He has been so wonderful and calm with our 3 year old. Sleeping in the crate at night is still not his favorite thing, but we are working on it. He is getting more exercise, and is starting to get his figure back. We are very happy that he is part of the family, and he seems content also. Thanks for checking in!! Take care,

Tina and family

Patchy
July 23, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
I just wanted to give you a quick update on Patchy. She has been a part of our family now for a little over six weeks and is doing wonderful! She has lost 10 pounds and is a bundle of energy. She is far from the dog we brought home six weeks ago. She has a ton of energy and is running around like a crazy woman! When we first brought her home she didnt move much, lounging around all day, now a days she is like a puppy running around playing and she has soo much energy. She loves to chase the tennis ball and we recently found out she loves to swim too. We are so happy to have her as part of our family and want to thank you all again for all that you do.

Danielle and Kevin L.

Kip and Keiko
July 22, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Just wanted to give the brief update on the kitties - Kip and Keiko (fka Pumba and Arora). They are doing really well (in fact Keiko is sitting in my lap as I type this). Kip went crazy as soon as he got here and has been all over the place and is super friendly. Keiko has been very shy and is taking some time - 1st 2 days stayed under the bed and then to the litter box etc. but every day she is making more and more adventures for herself. Kip and Molly (our Bassett) have been within 2 feet of each other several times with a few hisses from Kip but so far very low drama. No fast friendships but no drama which is nice. Keiko has not yet been that close to her. Hope all is well and enjoy the photos!

Milo (fka Jack)

Boo (fka Jill)
July 22, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
I just wanted to update you on the twins. My daughter had picked out new names for our kittens before we even decided which ones we wanted, so I hope you don't mind that we renamed Jack to Milo, and Jill to Boo. We really loved the names Jack and Jill, so we hemmed and hawed about it quite a bit before finally deciding. They have already settled in and are doing wonderfully. They eat, play, sleep, eat, play and sleep some more. They get along fine with our 7-year old pooch, Corky, and she doesn't seem to mind having them around at all. And they are just little snugglers - they love to be held and be near people. Here are a few of the many pictures that we've already taken of them. If you like, I'll send along more as they get older.

Kelly L.

Sophie
July 16, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Sophie and our family are having fun getting to know each other. She has settled in very nicely. The only bad habit we need to work on is that she likes to explore kitchen counters. Today, she ate the steak, my wife took out of the freezer for me and my boys. Other than that she has been a joy to have in the family. We found that she loves to travel. We brought her camping with us this weekend. Once she became familiar with our site neighbors, she sat and watched all the activities going on without making any noise. Thanks for our new family member.

The Barils

Clancey
July 15, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Just wanted to give you an update on our little man Clancey!! He's doing great!! We took him up to Maine to do some camping over the 4th of July weekend and he even went with us about 8 miles down the Saco river in a canoe! He's a great little guy, we're still working on training but he's coming along great! Here's Clancey and Chloe relaxing under a picnic table at the campground and just Clancey....he was one pooped pup after a whole day on the water.. :O)

Princess and her friend
July 14, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
My husband and I just wanted to thank Joe and Nicole for all of their help in adopting Princess. We just love having her in our home. She is a wonderful addition to our family. Thanks again.

Brady (fka Larry)
July 11, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Larry, now Brady, is doing very well. He is very sweet and tries to get his cat brothers to play dog games with him, he just doesn't realize when the cat chases him back, the cat is angry!! He loves to go to the lake, but won't swim. He just wades. He loves to relax on the porch and snuggle with the kids. If the kids are on the floor Brady will just lay on them like they are his littermates! He is very calm and rarely barks. He can not stand to be alone, the neighbors say when he is home alone he whines until we return. He doesn't understand they won't let him in the supermarket. We have through the years adopted many shelter dogs, Brady is by far the best dog we have ever had. He already had basic dog manners and has learned the finer points very quickly. Thank You for matching us with such a great dog! Nate L.

Shiloh
July 9, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Matthew & I are writing to you to give you an update on Shiloh. She is doing really well and has adjusted to the baby and our cat's. We have been taking her for walks at West ville Dam and she loves it, when we get home she is all tired out. Matt plays with her in the house and she runs all over the place. Shiloh is doing very good with her medicine, and she has not gotten loose since that one time we told you about. There is one little issue, we have to close off the living room at night and when we leave her home when we go out, due to her chewing apart our couch. We woke up one morning and our couch was in the middle of the living room, and stuffing and pieces of the couch were everywhere, she tore apart my slippers, and chewed apart my purse. We bought her tennis balls and she tore them apart as well. We love Shiloh and are happy with our decision. enclosed are some pictures I took of her a couple day ago. Sincerely,

Marlene and Matthew

Maggie
July 9, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Maggie is doing awesome! I had her for obedience class and just fell in love with her. She loves walks around the neighborhood, running around the backyard on her zipline my brothers built, and doing a few tricks for some treats. Everytime I come home she wiggles, cries, and runs up to me very excited to get some attention. Maggie, AKA doodles, loves her stuffed animals!!! She gets a good grip on it and throws it around and sometimes will play "fetch" with it. The cats in the house get a little nervous with this big, engergetic new animal in the house but they all find their areas of the house and have been getting along fine :). Maggie loves my boyfriend's 2 dogs and my dads 16 yr old american eskimo, Junior. Whenever we bring her over she gets so excited and jumps all over him Hes an older dog now and can not do a lot of playing but seems to get excited to have another dog over. Before Maggie my mom was not the biggest fan of dogs, being more of a cat fan, but she has actually grown quite attached to her. When I am away she sleeps with my mom and my moms boyfriend, hogging not only space, but the pillows. Thanks again for allowing Maggie to join our Becker Kennel program. I have been taking some great pictures of her and attached a couple to this email. I will try to send more soon. Thanks again,

Ashley H.

Dante
July 7, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Haven't written in a while because I've been so busy protecting Mommy and keeping her happy. I have to check out everyone who walks by or comes into our house and announce them very loudly, but then I go lie down at Mommy's feet to see that she's safe. That keeps me very busy. I have found two things that I just don't like: one is something called "thunder" - I have found a puff that Mommy keeps near her bed in case she gets cool at night that I curl up in until the noise goes away. Boy, I really shake when that's going on! The other is something called "fireworks". Mommy's house is near McCoy Stadium where the Pawtucket Red Sox play and they just had 4 nights of fireworks. They're not quite as bad as thunder, but I don't like them, either. Good thing they're gone for another year! I'm getting awfully smart.....I've figured out that when Mommy puts those braces on, that means she's going out and leaving me alone. So, yesterday when she was getting ready for church, I emptied her pocketbook all over the floor! Yup, keys, makeup, everything! I don't think she was very happy, but it kept her home a little longer. Now she keeps it zipped so I can't pull that trick again. It was almost as much fun as emptying her waste basket! But, she keeps that empty now, too, so will have to find something else to keep me busy. Maybe I should try some of the toys she keeps on my blanket. I don't know what to do with them, but maybe someday......... Hope you're still planning to stop in next month!! Hugs,

Dante

Sara
June 30, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
We adopted Sarah last fall [late summer] and shortly thereafter headed for our new digs in Englewood Fl. This update is to let you know that "our girl Sarah" is an absolute love. She is a very important part of our every day lives. She loves to travel.....and it's a good thing 'cuz we do it a lot. She has been back and forth to Florida twice and just came back from a week in Maine with two of our daughters and 4 grandsons....ages 4 to 11......Sarah loves the kids....the kids love Sarah.....Sarah loves the ocean . Anyway we had a great week. Thanks again for doing what you do......great dogs like Sarah deserve to be with a family.....and she certainly is a important part of ours. Hope all is well with you and your organization.

Benson
June 30, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Just wanted to let you see that I’ve celebrated my second birthday (and first anniversary) with my forever family ! It is a great life… my dad and I take a walk every morning and I get to go with him on errands and explore the trails up behind our house. Everyone says I am such a handsome guy, and of course I’m a love bug! Life is sweet ! Take care, gotta go ! Love,

Benson

Susie (fka Sussy)
June 25, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Sussi, now called Susie is doing very well. She is very sweet and a real lap dog. We are still having a few accidents of the housebreaking variety but they are becoming more infrequent. She is wonderful meeting new people. She was a bit anxious with other dogs, especially those who greeted her with barking. Fortunately we have a dog park within our trailer park where she has played with a 7 month old Lab. She held her own but was exhausted. We walk her with a halti and that helps her to greet other dogs with less anxiety. All is all, she is doing quite well and is adjusting to being spoiled and pampered. I will keep you informed of her progress.

Lucy
June 25, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Congratulations to all the volunteers and staff at SCAS! You folks are doing a phenomenal job! Sorry to hear that SCAS didn't win the makeover, but from all the e-mails Sheryl is sending out, it sounds like great things are happening. I wish I could pull myself away from Lucy long enough to go to the shelter to volunteer, but I'm away from her all day while at work that I feel bad when leaving her again in the evening. Speaking of Lucy....she is wonderful! I love her to bits and she is so much fun to hang with. She is spoiled, spoiled, spoiled, but she is a great dog and funny as heck! She is still wicked stubborn, but we both have learned how to deal with each others stubborness! I'm attaching a couple pictures for you if you want to put them on the Happy Endings page or just to see them yourself. Lucy and I will be at the Walk 'n Wag in September but I hope to get to the shelter way before then to say "hi". I check out the web site at least once a week! Take care.

Faye and Lucy

Rex
June 23, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Rex is doing wonderful here. We've had him for a couple months now and he loves his new home. He has settled in very nicely. Deacon and RexRex and Deacon enjoy walks in the morning and then they lay in the sun together. Rex warms everyone's heart, our company loves to pet and play with him. He brings a smile to all. Thanks Second Chance for allowing us to bring Rex to his "forever home." We're all very happy we found him. Here are some pictures, now everyone at Second Chance can see how comfortable Rex is here. Keep in touch!

Georgia
June 23, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Here are some pictures of Georgia Belle. It is wonderful to be home for summer and have all day to play with her. She is still shy, but quickly wins the hearts of all the humans who meets her. She loves meeting new dogs, and her best friend is Lulu, another recently rescued puppy. She is still learning about life with cats. All she wants to do is kiss and play with them, but they sometimes prefer to keep their distance. She has gotten so much bigger, and is much more outgoing since she first came to live with us. We will send you more pictures soon. Thank you once again for blessing us with Miss Georgia Belle.

Sammy (fka Orange)
June 23, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
"Orange" has adjusted wonderfully. We have re-named him Sammy. The first few days he hid a little, but he is now king of the house and has us wrapped around his little paws. Sammy is so loving and playful and has brought us so much happiness. We went to Petco and bought him some toys; we have yet to come across a toy that he doesn't love! His first vet visit went well; the vet called him a beautiful, healthy, confident kitten and he is due to go back in a few weeks to get his final shots. Sammy loves to snuggle and he has even got our schedule down pat where he is like our second alarm clock; he will come over and nuzzle our face purring :) I just can't begin to tell you how much we love him and we are so happy he choose us at the shelter. I have already recommended your shelter to several people looking to adopt a pet. We are so thankful that you took such good care of Sammy while he was waiting for us to come take him home. I have attached some pictures of Sammy; he is such a ham.

Toby
June 23, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Here's a picture of Toby relaxing. He is a great dog and a wonderful addition to our household. Toby is very well behaved and has adjusted well to his new home. He and Gypsy (also adopted from Second Chance) get along great and have fun running and playing. Toby is slowly dropping some weight although he has a few more pounds to go. Please thank Nicole and Joe for all their help.

Tucker (fka Max) and
his friend Amber
June 19, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
We're extremely happy to report on "Max", who we renamed "Tucker" after we adopted him in February. He is the perfect dog! His personality is very friendly, he is well behaved, and he very quickly became at home with us. At the time we brought Tuck home there were four dogs living here, and currently he shares the house with us and our Aussie, "Amber". Tucker and Amber are totally in love with each other; and they love to wrestle and chase each other around in the backyard. We were very surprised to find a dog who apparently has no "issues", especially having been through a tough time and ending up in shelter care. It's worth noting that a lot of good pets end up going through hard times, and therefore it's crucial that these animals be placed in good homes. Tucker is a good example of this, and Second Chance does a marvelous job of matching pet with a good home. Many thanks for making the adoption process satisfying in all respects, and we'll bring Tuck by once in a while for a visit. Sincerely,

Dave D. and Paula S., Amber and Tucker

Sassy

June 19, 2008
HI Second Chance,
Sassy has been with us almost 6 months and is truly part of our family. Our 3 kids love to play with her. She loves to play with sticks, chasing and catching them. She will dig in the dirt pile for as long as you let her. She comes when called, and checks on all family members to see where they are and what they are doing. Sassy rarely barks and is very friendly. She even gets along with our cat, Smokey, sniffing him but not chasing him. She is learning to obey commands even when she sees other things that catch her attention. She definitely is one of kind she has such a great personality and we could not have found a better dog to fit in with our family. Thank you.

The Borelli family

Anastasia and Hosanna

June 17, 2008
HI Second Chance,
Both Hanna (Hoosana) and Stasia (Anastasia) are doing absolutely great. Hanna is completely settled and enjoys laying on the couch, or one of the two leather chairs (one in Rick's office and mine in the great room) to rest. She has turned out to be a huntress and spends quite a bit of time under the bird feeders stalking chimpmunks, unfortunately she has prematurely ended the lives of three of them. We try not to encourage this - but it is a great pass time for her, chipmunk hunting. She is laid back and friendly with everyone and seems quite content in life. She is a beautiful dog, very regal. Stasia is also doing well. She is much more precosius than Hanna and enjoys taking the rugs from our bathroom and from by the back door and dragging them to a spot in front of my chair in the great room. She does not chew them, just takes them there. She is very devoted to me and follows me everywhere in the house. Stasia is less secure than Hanna but is very, very smart with sparkling eyes. She "smiles" broadly whenever I talk to her and she wiggles her whole body she wags her tail so hard when you pet her. She is a wonderfuly lively girl (no interest in chimpmunks) who is thriving in her life here with us. She is still shy with strangers so I am trying to take her around more and let her meet people. We are going to sign up for an obedience course which should also help. She is a very sleek girl - really very pretty, with so much life in her. We love them both and they are very good companions. They each have a place in our bedroom (big dog bed pillow things) where they sleep, along with our 13+ yr. old whippet (Peaches). That is 5 of us in the bedroom - you have to watch where you step when you get up in the night. Both of the girls are good with Peaches, never unkind to her, so that has been a great relief. While they have not yet taken the place of Peaches' long time buddy (Tottie our old greyhound), she does seem to enjoy their company will play "grab the squeaky toy and run" with them. Thanks again for getting us these two super dogs.

Tyler

June 17, 2008
I want you all to know Tyler is doing absolutely fantastic! He is such a character, he always keeps us smiling! Since he's been with us he's only had 2 "accidents" in the house. He has gained 7 pounds and now weighs 45 pounds, but still looks tiny to us. He learns extremely quickly, and anytime he's tried to chew or eat something (clothing, rugs, etc ) he's not supposed to he only has to be told "NO" once. He knows the commands sit, stay, shake, lay, off, and down. He and Madison are practically joined at the hip, and they always have to be touching each other...wake, sleep, play, eating, anytime! We got them a bigger crate to share, because they whined when put in separate crates. The only "issue" if you can call it such, is during our runs in the woods. Madison runs off-leash, and I run with Tyler on leash, but he wants to be with her, so he pulls to keep up with her. We've tried them both off-leash, but they think that's time to go off for a grand adventure on their own, so we're working with running them both on-leash until we learn better how to teach them to stay next to us...any suggestions? All of this in less than a month's time...it just doesn't seem possible. :) Overall, he's just a terrific little dog who embraces each new day and every new experience with joyful, enthusiasm and vigor, and we're so happy to have him as part of our family!

Zane

June 17, 2008
Zane has turned out to be amazing. He is exactly the sort of dog that we wanted in our lives. He's polite, quiet, well behaved, and has lots of fun with us. There was a bit of tension in the house when he first came home. Our wonderful cats (whom also came from second chance) and him needed to play out their order of things, but now Zane and Tessa are buddies and Ishkabibble just sort of accepts that he's there. No fighting anymore ever, they're happy housemates. He loves going for afternoon walks with my wife and I after work and has just all around adapted well. Everyone that meets him thinks he's a sweetheart. He is very nervous though we've learned of loud noises. He HATES thunderstorm and really dislikes cars which is fine by us -- it keeps him close by on his walks! All in all Zane has been amazing and has really turned into a very special part of our lives. I would do anything for my boy and he definitely fills the void I had since I moved out of my parents years ago and had to leave my childhood pup behind. He's amazing and we're thankful everyday we were given the chance to adopt him. Regards,

Phil S.

Skittles (aka Nina)

June 16, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
We rename all our adopted pets so as to make them part of our family. We discussed Nina's new name and decided on "Skittles". She is as you know was very timid around men and also we found out likes to run around wild when not on her run. So Skittles fits her well. We are all still learning from each other but am happy to report Skittles doesn't run off and can walk around her very big yard without a leash. She still needs constant attention and watching while doing this but is making steady progress. Skittles also loves furniture and loves to hang out with family on couch which we all enjoy. Her extreme nervousness around men has greatly improved and even strange men can approach her with care. Unfortunately we cannot tell you what Skittles doesn't like to eat. To date she's eaten just about everything we eat. Her weight is good and no longer can you feel vertebrae or ribs while hugging/patting her which she loves. Skittles also enjoy the frequent trips she takes in our auto's and seems to really enjoy our jeep now that the top is off. We are planning on taking Skittles to Maine this summer on vacation and are enthusiastic to be able to include her. She is very happy with us and we are with her. Skittles improves everyday and we all look forward to spending time with her daily. My daughter especially has a new best friend and plays with her constantly. Skittles is also acquiring a wardrobe due to my daughter and surprises us from time to time with Doggie fashion.

June 16, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Jake has been doing great and is still full of energy. He has a friend next door which is a boxer and they play for hours. As soon as I can get some time I will fill you in more and send you some pics. Thanks.

Jenny

June 16, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Jenny is doing GREAT. She has completely settled in to our lives as if she was always here. And my day care kids adore her. She is out of the crate we got her & roaming the first floor of our house when we go out & at night. We got the invisible fence last week & she is adapting very well, although neither of us liked the first shock! She hasn't had to get more than two though... she is such a good learner. She's roaming around the yard with me outside and doesn't even bother with the dog next door. She is really and truly the best dog ever, with the exception of the shedding! LOL She has the greatest voice when she wants to go do her business or be pet or eat or hang on the deck with the gate up. Never a bark out of her which is the exact opposite of our other dog. It's a little growl like a bear cub! She loves to please all of us and have her belly rubbed. She's learned a few new commands too. Keep up the great work at the shelter.

Rocky (fka Elvis)

June 16, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Elvis is doing fantastic: our boys renamed him: Rocky. Rocky seems to have a hunting breed in him: he smells everything; nose up in the air, or down against the ground. He's learned most all the behavioral moves...the boys really love him. He gets plenty of exercise and has a wireless fence to play in. The neighbors all think he's the best... I'll have our boys send over some photo's. Thanks,

Joe L.

Slushy and friend Emily

June 16, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Slushy is doing well - despite a couple rough patches. We are still having a little bit of trouble with him peeing in the house while home alone. He doesn't seem to be able to go more than 4 or 5 hours without going. But other than that he is definitely a great dog. He's well-mannered, affectionate and gets along great with my 5-year-old daughter. He has also put on enough weight to make the vet happy as he was a bit mal-nourished when we adopted him, from being a stray. We are so happy to have been able to adopt Slushy from Second Chance. I recommend you guys to everyone and hope you continue the great work that you do. I attached a picture of Slushy and Emily being lazy on the couch! Thank You.

Kadin

June 16, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Kadin is doing well. I am keeping his name. I went and used my Petco coupons today and got some goodies for him. Thank you,

Katie and Kadin

Feria

June 15, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
We love Faria! She has settled in as she has always been our dog. The kids love her and company we've had over always compliments what a good dog she is. She does like to chew on things but we can't expect perfection! So we are a bit more aware and careful of what we leave around. I try to deter her w/ bones to chew on. We are very happy that we had come upon her at the shelter. It was a happy ending.

Mike and Mack

June 15, 2008
Hi Second Chance,
Mike and Mack are doing great! They are having a blast here. The first day they were very shy and didn't know what was going on but now they rule. I am glad I got both because they have a lot of fun together. My kids just love them. Thanks so much for checking in.

Buddy

June 13, 2008
