Lily
The Victim of a Congenital Defect
Lily's Story

If you look at her picture, it is undeniable that she is just the cutest little “peanut” that you one could ever see. On the surface she seems to be just a “happy go lucky” Yellow Lab Puppy. But, she has come up against something that she had no choice in. She was brought to us after only living 10 wks of her life. She suffers from a congenital defect called “Bilateral Ectopic Ureters”. Ectopic Ureters is a defect that causes the ureters to empty urine into another location, other than the bladder, most commonly in the vagina, urethra or uterus. Even more tragic is that our little girl has the Bilateral version of the defect which occurs in only 25% of all cases detected. In her case both ureters are not bringing the urine to the bladder. If it were not corrected immediately she could have suffered multiple organ failures particularly kidney failure and we would loose this little Angel before she could know how great life can be. We could not let that happen. We immediately scheduled her very complicated surgery so as to give her a chance for a normal life.

Although our Vet team put her odds of survival at 50%, our little Lily made it through her surgery, but is still not out of the woods. She will spend the next month or so with one of our loving Foster families where she will be monitored and cared for in a home environment while she rehabilitates. Part of the consequences of her defect is incontinence. She is constantly wet due to not being able to control her flow. She needs multiple bathings and cleanings during her day to keep her from getting other infections and skin conditions. Once she recovers from the surgery, the next step is to help her control her bladder with a daily medication.

Lilly still has an uphill battle… but she has the support of all of us at Second Chance, most especially her foster mom who cares for her every day. She may require additional surgery as time goes on. We just won’t know for a while, how successful her emergency surgery was until all of the internal swelling has subsided. But we will bring whatever resources might be needed to give Lilly a chance at full recovery. Our hopes and prayers are with her and we await the day that we finally place her with her forever family, healthy, full of energy and ready to bring a ton of joy into her new home.

The expenses for Lily have been and will continue to be great. We cannot say no to this wonderful little life and her issues that are not her fault. We are hoping that she will make a full recovery and have a full life. We have done well in the past with dogs like Blackie and Dante bringing them from mounds of matted fur and neglect into wonderful dogs adopted to a better life. We hope the same for Lily. We hope that you will help us with Lily and help us cover her emergency and rehabilitation expenses. We think she is worth it and we hope you do too. It takes all of us to give pets a Second Chance and we need your support. As you know we rely on the kindness of our community to help us to continue to be able to save as many of our friends as possible. Lilly is worth all of our efforts. Update on Lily - July 11, 2008!

Lily has been recovering very well over the past month from her surgery. She was well enough to have her spay surgery done and did just fine with that. Her incontinence has improved dramatically although she still has some small issues with it. Her medication continues to be adjusted in an effort to get it completely under control.

She was a "Star" on the Mike & Juliet show back on June 27th. She "wowed" everyone in the country with her "wiggly", happy way. Second Chance received an overwhelming number of applications for her adoption from across the country. However, her foster mom, who has nursed her to health and continues to give her the care she so needs, has decided to adopt her and make her officially hers. We are all very, very happy for our little Lily.

Although she still has a way to go to full recover, she is making great progress.
Thank yous will be posted here as donations are received!
